A roadmap for affordable genetic medicines.

Nature (Oct 2024) --- Twenty genetic therapies have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to date, a number that now includes the first CRISPR genome-editing therapy for sickle cell disease-CASGEVY (exagamglogene autotemcel, Vertex Pharmaceuticals). This extraordinary milestone is widely celebrated owing to the promise for future genome-editing treatments of previously intractable genetic disorders and cancers.

Engineered T cell therapy for central nervous system injury

Nature (Oct 2024) --- Traumatic injuries to the central nervous system (CNS) afflict millions of individuals worldwide1, yet an effective treatment remains elusive. Following such injuries, the site is populated by a multitude of peripheral immune cells, including T cells, but a comprehensive understanding of the roles and antigen specificity of these endogenous T cells at the injury site has been lacking. This gap has impeded the development of immune-mediated cellular therapies for CNS injuries.

Finance Day, Leipzig, Wachstumskapital für die Life Sciences

Finance Day has been a fixture for start-up, growth and capital market financing in the life sciences industry for 18 years. But this year there was a special premiere: Finance Day took place in Leipzig for the first time! A big thank you to GoingPublic Media and Platform Life Sciences for the excellent organization of this important event! In the inspiring atmosphere of BioCity Leipzig, numerous exciting life science projects and start-ups presented themselves to renowned investors from all over Germany.

We are particularly proud of the innovative companies from the SaxoCell universe, including Seamless Therapeutics, Katana Labs and Singleron. Our cluster spokesperson Ulrike Köhl also introduced the future cluster SaxoCell and some of the partner companies such as Cancilico, T-Cell Tolerance and T-Curx.
In addition to inspiring pitches and intensive networking opportunities, the evening event also offered an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and make new contacts.

Many thanks also to Biosaxony and Leipzig for Life Changers – we learned a lot and had a lot of fun!

Leipzig Immune-Oncology Conference

At this year’s LION, SaxoCell members joined key innovators to explore the latest in cellular immunotherapy. Over 200 participants spent two days discussing exciting topics in immuno-oncology at the Fraunhofer IZI. With sessions on breakthroughs in CAR-T, CAR-NK, and gene-edited cell therapies, LION 2024 showcased how the field is rapidly advancing. Highlights included new strategies for treating lymphomas and targeting solid tumors, insights into NK cell therapies, and innovations in CAR cell manufacturing.

International key note speakers, over 40 posters and plenty of exhibitors ensured a variety of input and exchange possibilities. The LION conference was organized by Fraunhofer IZI and University Leipzig.

Precision medicine in focus: Successful 8th Life Science Forum brings science and industry together in Leipzig

The 8th Life Science Forum Leipzig took place at the end of November, where over 80 participants from science and industry came together to discuss the latest developments and perspectives in precision medicine. The event, jointly organized by the Saxony Economic Development Agency (WFS) and the SaxoCell future cluster, impressively demonstrated how important the dialogue between research and industry is for progress in precision medical technology. After the opening by Uwe Lienig (WFS) and Stefanie Binder (SaxoCell), participants could expect a varied program with top-class lectures. The highlights included the inspiring keynotes by Prof. Dr. Martin Bornhäuser (Dresden University Hospital), Dr. Maximilian Merz (Leipzig University Hospital) and Dr. Thorsten Pisch (Gilead Sciences), which offered exciting insights into current advances and challenges in precision medicine.

The program was supplemented by lectures on innovative approaches in diagnostics and therapy, which focused on practical solutions for the healthcare of tomorrow. The active participation of numerous Saxon companies, including Seamless Therapeutics, Cancilico, T Cell Tolerance, DKMS Life Science Lab and MDTB Cells, was particularly pleasing. These contributions underline Saxony's outstanding position as a location for innovative developments in the life science industry. The venue, BioCity Leipzig, provided the perfect setting for a successful day full of intensive discussions, networking and knowledge exchange. "The Life Science Forum Leipzig has once again proven how important this regular exchange is for the further development of precision medicine," summarized Stefanie Binder from SaxoCellutions.

A big thank you goes to the Saxony Economic Development Agency (WFS) for the first-class organization. The event was a complete success and we are looking forward to continuing this important dialogue. The Life Science Forum regularly brings together experts from science and industry to discuss key issues in life sciences and biotechnology. With a focus on current challenges and innovations, the forum offers a platform for interdisciplinary exchange and networking within the industry.
